My Hot Cross Buns Recipe

Let me first start by saying this, I have never been fond of the regular style hot cross buns, made with candied fruit and mixed spice. So I after I got my first bread maker I started the search for a recipe that I could appreciate and I eventually ended up with these.

I've finally perfected this recipe so I'm sharing it here with you, enjoy!

(NOT SO) Traditional Hot Cross Buns

DOUGH:

2 1/2 tsp active dry yeast
1 cup warm soymilk
1/2 cup lukewarm water
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 large eggs (use egg replacer)
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp cardamom
3/4 tsp salt
4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, approx.

1 cup currants (or in a pinch, golden raisins)

2 tsp margarine, melted (for brushing on the tops after baking)

GLAZE:

1/2 cup Icing sugar, approx.
2 1/2 tsp milk, approx.
1/8 tsp vanilla

Place dough ingredients in bread maker on dough setting. Add currants
at the beep.
At end of cycle, punch down dough. Cut off egg-size pieces and shape
into balls.
Arrange in single layer, about 3/4 inch apart, in greased 9 x 13 inch
pan. Cover with tea towel.
Let rise until doubled in size. Cut a cross on top of each bun about
1/4 inch deep using a sharp knife.
Bake in 375 degree F. oven for about 15 minutes, until golden. Turn out
on wire racks to cool.

Brush warm tops with melted margarine. Cool.

Glaze, optional:

Combine icing sugar, milk and vanilla in small bowl, adding more icing
sugar or milk until barely pourable consistency. Drizzle or pipe over
slashes.

Makes 24 buns.

These are so good that I get requests for them from my relatives every Easter. Even the ones who actually like traditional hot cross buns.

Hee Hee! I made Hot Cross Buns too...look on my blog! Yours are more bun-like. I used whole wheat pastry flour and they didn't rise as much. I also like that you used cardamom. I bet those were tasty!

That's so funny that we both made hot cross buns.

I was so excited when I noticed that someone has already tried my recipe.

Haha no, my Irish Soda Bread wasn't green... my mom learned her lesson many years ago when she tried to make my sister and me a green dinner, and she put food coloring in the mashed potatoes. We refused to eat them!

CCV,
A green dinner, does sound fun, but maybe green mashed potatoes is taking it a little too far!

Cookiemouse,
Thanks that's so nice to hear.
